help with windows

i have just recieved a laptop with windows me installed, anyway plugged in a usb hdd which had xp on it and tried to install itself but now the laptop wont boot any ideas would be helpfull. have tried to reinstall me but it will not go past a screen saying “setup is inspecting your computers hardware configuraton”
