For those of you who have been in the business for awhile, I am sure that you can relate to the situation that I am in with a new client. I have been working on what initially seemed like a minor problem, and now I have been working on it for 3 days pulling my hair out trying to get it fixed.
I started working for a new client that has a small client / server network, running 14 Windows-based clients and 1 Windows SBS 2003. When I was called in to do some work on it one of the things that we had to do was factory reset the Sonicwall TZ 170 firewall because nobody had any idea what the login and password was, which makes working on it tough. So after doing that, I re-configured all of the settings and an hour later we were back online and all was good.
However, after making my rounds on all of the computers I discovered that 3 of the 14 computers could connect to the network, login to the domain, access the file server and all, but these 3 computers could no longer access the Internet. So I could ping all the other IP addresses on the network from these 3 computers but nothing outside of the firewall. Keep in mind the other 11 computers could access the Internet. Here is what I have done so far:
– Reset all of the settings in on the machines (TCP/IP Settings)
– Reset all of the Internet settings in the browser
– Verified domain credentials
– Tested all patch cables and premise wiring (I know I know. Why do that when the computers could access the file server?
I was just trying to make sure my bases were covered!)
– Rebooted machines and server countless times
Am I missing something here? Is this one of those goofy things where it is a simple fix but I am just overlooking it? Sometimes you get so into a problem that you end up over-thinking it and that may be what I am doing here.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks!
