Home network options

by vancechan . Updated 24 years, 9 months ago

I have cable modem access and my main objective is shared internet between my desktop, another desktop, and a notebook. Having read some reviews, I am confused by the various home networking options now available. The choice appears to be between Home PNA 2.0 and a wireless 802.11 , but I can?t figure out what?s best for me.

1. On one hand, my house has 3 floors and a lot of concrete in the structure; so I suspect Home PNA 2.0 with USB is the way to go rather than run the risk of poor reception using 802.11

2. On the other hand, I?m not clear on if a gateway is needed for both options, and what advantage that provides. (I already have the cable modem)

3. And does anyone have experience with the true speed of a 10-MB Home PNA2.0 network? How does it compare with the 10MB 802.11?

I?d like to know the pros / cons of the two options, and what hardware (gateways, adapters, etc) I need using each. Slots are an issue so in either case I’m looking for USB. Brand recommendations are optional.

Thanks!
