Home Network with DSL & Cable…

by nul4guard-4 . Updated 19 years, 4 months ago

I have DSL(PPPoE) on one PC. I have Cable(DHCP) on another. Both on XP pro. I use a simple 4 port hub and a cross-over cable to connect everything together. Currently I can’t connect the PC’s while using my Cable(DHCP) connection.

While connected to the hub:

I can connect to the internet with both PC’s(one using DSL and the other using Cable).

-OR-

I can connect PC’s while connected to the internet using the DSL.

I want to have the local network functioning while having internet for both PC’s, one using DSL and the other using Cable. (No ICS / Proxy Servers needed or wanted)

I am using an alternative IP configuration with the DHCP. Basically, if I disconnect the cable modem from the hub, it will automatically use the other IP configuration(192.168.x.x) and I can then connect the PC’s while still using the DSL. But with the cable modem connected it uses DHCP and I get “The Network Name Cannot Be Found” when trying to connect to the other computer. Both internets work fine but I cannot ping the other PC locally.

Is it possible to have all three things simultaniously(DSL internet, Cable internet, and Local Network) without buying a router? Can I do it with another NIC installed to the DHCP machine?

Maybe by assingning one NIC DHCP and the cable modem, then the other to 192.168.x.x and connect directly to the other PC?

thanks!
