HOOKING UP EXTERNAL MONITOR TO DELL NOTEBOOK

I am trying to use a Compaq 19″ monitor with my Dell. I hooked it up, but I am not getting any image on the external monitor. Am I using the wrong cable (using blue one that came with monitor)? Do I need a VGA cable adapter? Dell is Inspiron 6000 and LCD back light is not working.
