Hot Swapping drives with raid 1

POS system that we are currently using is setup as raid 1. The POS app has issues. Upgrading isn’t going to smooth. Suggestions brought to table was to reconfigure setup and just swap drives. Testing in Lab lost data and a drive. Any suggestions?
