How can I tell which browsers to use safely?

I know that there is a way to tell if a browser is safe to use, but I do not know what it is that tells you that. If anybody knows how to check or test a browser please let me know. I usually just look through the site and see if it looks reliable, but at that point I feel like if it wasn’t a secure site that I am already at risk for security issues.
