How do I maintain an overall view in the heat of delivery?

Once again I have found myself scrambling for two days to pull peripheral areas of my project back in to line because I got sucked in to delivery issues with the core solution.

What tools / techniques do you use to ensure you pull your head out of the immediate issue and stay focussed on the game plan?
