I simply don’t undestand this.
I have a Windows XP SP2 workstation in a typical enterprise environment. I need to install a program on it. I log in as the network administrator and install it. It runs great. I then log into the machine with the actual user’s account (mydomain/User).
The installed program simply crashes upon launch. No indication as to why. Administrator can run this fine so it has to be a permissions issue.
– I gave this user Full Control of EVERY file on the C drive. The program won’t run.
– I went into Control panel/User accounts and gave the user Adminsitrative access to the local machine. The program won’t run.
– I gave the user Network Administrator privs, the highest access level I can give. The program still won’t run.
– I deleted the entire user profile and had Windows re-create it. Same problem.
– I logged in as the network admin and uninstalled the program. I logged in as the user (now admin) installed the program and it runs fine!
So a new .exe was generated to fix a bug (this is a custom app written in VB.Net). I copy the .exe file over and… it crashes! Copy the old one over and it works. ??!!?
What is going on here? Why can’t I simply log into a machine as the network administrator, install a program and have it work for any user that logs into the machine? Why, when I give this user Administrative privs on the entire C drive can they not run this program? They have “full control’ of every file in the machine. I’ve even given the user full access to the entire registry and still, the program crashes. Only if I give the user Admin privs and install it AS that user does it work.
This isn’t the only workstation like this. Some install and run forever without complaint, some are like this; a complete and utter horror show. Any ideas?
Thanks!
