How does one become a DBA?

It seems like all the jobs out there want 5-10 (or more years experience), but what is a recent grad to do? I have a BS in Computer Science and Information Systems. I can write a decent SELECT statement, but my education was more like an overview than real-world preparation. What paths did people that are out there doing it every day take to get to the “expert” level? I feel like I’m expected to just know everything, or go get SQL for dummies and read it over a weekend and magically memorize it…
