How is index field code removed to show index entries as regular text?

I’m attempting to print some Word documents previously created. Indexes are the last part of the documents. They show in normal, print layout and print preview modes. However, when I go to print the document, the indexed pages, the XE bracketed material, no longer shows up. Toggling the field code displays the index contents again, but it still cannot be printed. I’d prefer to just undo the field code to have the indexed material as regular text since I’m not updating the index anyway. It’s not just a matter of “hidden” font.
