How long does it take to uninstall service pack three of XP?

I’m uninstalling service pack 3 of Windows XP so I can uninstall Internet Explorer 8 (I believe it’s corrupted). My computer is uninstalling Service pack 3, but it’s been on the last step for possibly an hour now. Normally, how long does this take? Should I do a hard shut down?
