how to compress files before uploading/downloading via ftp (command line)

im a newbie when it comes to commandline ftp. i was wondering how i can upload/download groups of files using the command line? i know how to upload/download single files (one at a time). but how do i get/send multiple files. also, how can i compress them from the ftp server. thanks
