How to connect to console on router?

I have a RND and 3com router. I put the serial cable into the router and then into my laptop. I setup a new hyperterminal connection. Well then when it asked for spee and flow control, I left it as default. The it says it connected, but when youhit enter, nothing happens? I have done this many times on Cisco routers, and used the default settings. Is there somehting I should change in the default settings? Thanks
