I’m at a site where we have a Dell 1400 poweredge server with a raid array that will not post, even though I see lights on the motherboard and the raid array spins up. I am informed by Dell support that it is either the motherboard or the processor. I have obtained both parts. Since the system is so old, they are not the original parts but the latest supported version of the parts.
The worst part of this, is the data is NOT backed up. Our backup system failed a few weeks before and is also on my desk. We had a lightning storm a few weeks ago which seems to be the culprit, as my UPS is also blown.
While I am very confident replacing these items in a desktop unit, the RAID array intimidates me. I do not know whether I can simply install the new motherboard and processor, connect everything back up, and move on like nothing happened. Or if the RAID controller is going to make things unsafe for the data in the RAID array.
Any advice here will be welcome. I am loathe to rely only on Dell’s support. I need more opinions. Thank you!
