Hello, I’m a Win95 user. I have problems with explorer.exe recently and it keeps crashing the system. After attempts to reinstall IE5 failed, I attempted to reinstall windows over itself (clicking “no” for overwritting newer system files), only to find out that Windows will not boot anymore! The error message says that there are faults in system.ini, and 10 .vxd files in the directory “c:\windows\system\vmm32\” are not present or are of invalid version. It then goes on to say that because of this, configuration manager cannot run and windows cannot start.
As I know I messed up with the windows system file, I now consider deleting the whole thing and reinstalling it, preferably trying Win98. The only problem is, I want to know if it is possible to install Windows without having the format the hard disk, as I have important files on it and I do not have a way to back up the data (apart from using millions of floppys!).
