How to switch motherboard and processor only.

I have a AMD sempron 2600+ 1.6 GHZ proccesor and a MSI MS-7142 K8MM-v Motherboard and I want to switch these with a Intel Pentium IV 2.4 GHZ and a motherboard that came with the Pentium IV. T tried this but the pc wouldn’t turn on until I plugged in the speaker(WTF?!). After that I smelled the scent of burned plastic… My question:
Is my motherboard dead and (if not) can I install it without a problem and (if yes) how????
