How to upload a file to a web server

Hi, this is probably a simple answer but I am not familiar with doing this.
I need to copy a file to a web server say, dev.server.com
I was told by my boss to log into the web server shell using ssh. How do I bring up the web server shell? Can I do so from the command prompt?
