how to widen your electromagnetic force

Hi,
is it possible to increase a range of your electromagnetic force? You can get a small electrostatic shock when your hand is a few millimeters away from your car door – but not from a foot away. Is it possible to build a small device that you can attach to your body that will widen the range?
