I can’t restore an exchange database to a recovery storage group

I created the recovery storage group. I made sure the database could be overwritten. Then when I try to restore from the tape it attempts to restore to the live database. It fails because that one can’t be overwritten (thank god). Its a single server exchange 2003 setup. The backup is from the same server about a year ago. Ive done this before and its worked. Any suggestions?
