I E 6.0 Short Cuts stops working

My desktop has numerous shortcuts to my favorite internet sites. They work fine for a while and then stop working. I can still open IE 6.0 and access the sites from favorites. After rebooting all shortcuts work for a while and then stop working again. The O/S is Win XP home, 256 Mb ram, Athlon 2000.
