I just re-installed xp pro and can only get windows to work using safe mode

My computer crashed bad and I had to do a clean re-install of my windows xp pro service pack 2. When I start up the computer normally, it shows like windows is starting and then I get a black screen and a box that says “out of range” and then nothing, I have to restart my computer manually and then click f8 and go to safe mode with networking to get anything to work (which I am on and using right now). I only have one computer so I really need to get this to work somehow. I have searched everywhere that I could to find a solution and cannot find one. I have a dell deminsion 8200 with 512 mb. Im not sure how to find all of my specs or what else I should put.
