At Xerox we used to put a Shock Watch in the handle in case someone dropped the thing. If you see red, you don’t put the thing in. At 10MB for the 70’s that was a lot of storage. It held the operating system and a couple of applications, such as Bravo (pregenetor of Mac Word and after a lot of years Win Word), Laurel (e-mail), FTP and SIL (pregenetor of MacDraw and a number of your working files. Backups for this was a network file server via FTP and the old 3MBps ethernet. Pretty hot stuff for the late 70’s.
Dating myself even more, my high school (yeah Hutch Tech) had an IBM 1130 with same form factor disk, with a whopping 3MB of storage. On the 1130 the inner to outer cylinder seek time was about 1700 msec. Makes a floppy look fast! BTW backups on the 1130 was to punch cards, a couple boxes of them!
