IBM ThinkPad 390E black screen

was trying to do an upgrade on this IBM i’ve wiped the harddrive of the windows 98 and when i went to reboot the screen is black now. so i can’t see anything when i want to install XP.. any ideas on what i need to do…everything is still connected…any info is appreciated!
