IBM ThinkPad R40 Locked Out?

Never set any type of password, maybe by mistake, but I cannot login. Actually as soon as I turn it “ON”, the computer asks for a password on the top left corner of display….I guaranteed that is is not stolen, it is mine. I had only one software package on it, A Mechanic’s Reference to Automotive Repair, that is it……
