Incompatibility of Win ’95 and Palm

I have several Win ’95 machines whose users need to share info. from their Palm. The software looks to the com port and not the USB connection. There is no option during setup.
Is this inherent in Win ’95 or is there a solution? So these machines need to upgraded to Win ’98 or is there a serial adaptor for the cradle, thus allowing the hot-sync capability?
