I have 2 (nearly identical) windows 2000 servers with 512 MB RAM. When I increased the RAM to 1024 MB odd things started to happen. Programs that load at startup don’t always load. The 2 servers don’t see each other on the network. Low system resource errors. Access rights errors when using the policy editor. On the 1st server I tried 4 – 256 MB modules (original 2 + 2 from second server). For the 2nd server, I installed 2 – 512 MB modules. When I went back to the original memory config. My problems went away.
This week I need to move the 2nd server to a new network. I installed 2 – 512 MB modules reformated the HDs and did a clean install. Things went okay until I was midway through installing Symantec Anti Virus Corp. Ed. Several modules would not install because of either a runtime error or were automatically terminated by Symantec. After reducing the memory 512 MB my errors went away and SAVCE installed correctly and the server is working find. Server specs. follow:
Mobo: Intel D865 PERLK (both servers)
CPU: Celeron 2.53 GHz / Celeron 2.8 GHz
RAM: DDR 400 / PC3200 Crucial (both)
Video: ATI Radeon 9200 (both)
HD: 2 – 80 MB SATA Mirrored (Seagate)(both)
Only a memory config. of 2 – 256MB modules seams to work. 4 – 256 MB modules or 2 – 512 MB modules does not work.
I ran memtest86 on the system when I had the 2 – 512K modules installed and the system passes.
