informix .dat and .idx files

I am in desparate need of information on how to read .dat and .idx files from an informix database. My client has provided me with these files but I do not currently have an informix database server installed. I tried reading these files from a hex editor but still getting some weird characters. Can anyone assist me with a way of reading these files???????
