Initializing Plug and Play

A windows 95 computer will not bootup. The last message it gives is that it is initializing plug and play. I cannot get it to boot to safe mode. I read somewhere there are some shortcut keys to use to get it to boot. I cannot remember them. Canyou help me or is it the hard drive is gone? Our technologist says it is a lost cause. I have heard otherwise. I do not want to loose all the information on the hard drive again if it is not necessary.
