Installation Hangups

I am running Windows 2000 Pro on my new computer. It is a dual celeron 533 with 256 ram. When I try to install Acrobat reader or Icq 2000 they both hang up after copying their dll files and such. Reader just quits like nothing happened and icq gets 100% done copying and locks up the system. The step by step cd that came with 2000 also will not install. When I click on install it thinks for a little bit and then quits. Do I have something setup wrong? Any ideal would be helpful.
