installing memory

I installed memory. When I hooked everything back up I turned on computer,I got an error message not all memory install I had 64 on side 256 on the other. I installed another 256 . The startup show the numbers installing ram 504 ram installed. What should I do? I own a compaq model #7470 amd-k6 chip
