installing ubuntu linux

I have a thinkpad x23 which has on ubuntu 5.10 and I want to do a full ubuntu 7.04 installation using a usb flash because I have no cd rom. When I try to make my usb flash bootable using syslinux /dev/sda I get a “boot Error” message. Is there a way I can go round this.
