interacting within the intranet

hi, i am working on a small chat application that works sumthin like a p2p. my question is, is it possible for me to connect 2 systems belonging to different subnet masks.. and if possible hw do i go about it.. well the 2 subnets are connected to the same server whihc i believe is firewalled. please help me, and thanks a ton in advance.
