Internet connection keeps disconnecting

Hi
I’m using XP Pro SP2, Internal 56k modem.
Once connected to the internet, sometimes not even a min later it auto disconnects, why I have not been able to trace.
Have tried an external 56k serial modem with slightly more success, thought that this was the answer, except auto disconnected after about 7 minutes
