internet connection on win2000 pro

I have win2000 professional and office xp installed and would like the correct procedure to connect it to the internet.I tried removing RAS and that did’nt work.The wizard keeps connecting to the wrong phone connection.It also is not getting the correct password.My procedure is not correct.Connect to a lan,to a hub ,to a router.

I seem to be getting all the advice but what I require and the computer is responding as if it is getting the wrong directions.
I would appreciate it,if you could point me in the right direction.Any mail directed to
