Internet Exploror Error

When I start my computer there is an error that reads: This program is incompatible with this verson of windows- ofr the miscrosoft internet explorer. i have downloaded i.e. 6 and it still says that. i kinda remember one of my friends mentioning something like this when he had a backdoor virus. could this be the cause of my error? if so, where can i download the fix for it?
