Internet Slowdown

by mbutts . Updated 22 years, 12 months ago

Network: (2) W2K SP4 servers (1 with SQL Server 2000 & E2K, the other with IIS & E2K), (30) W2K Pro SP4 clients, Symantec (Nexlan) 200R firewall, 1.5Mbps Cable Modem, 384kbps SDSL.

This network’s Internet browsing has been working fine for about 18 months. About 3 weeks ago, I started noticing intermittent slowdowns (Just about any server, from MSN to Google, will start to load, then 20-25 seconds will elapse, then rest of page loads almost instantly).

The problem has grown to appear in almost every browser session, with first click or two fast response, then the slowdown.

The DNS is set up to use the DC, with the Firewall listed as Forwarder. The Firewall has the correct DNS settings from both ISPs.

Pinging well-known sites works 100%, 50% and 0%.

Problem does not get better or worse with fewer clients logged on (some days, there’s only 5-6 people in the office).

I’ve tried:
Disconnecting the cable modem (so all traffic uses the SDSL)
Disconnecting the SDSL router (so all traffic uses the Cable Modem)
Resetting the firewall
Stopping/starting DNS
Swearing at the servers

without any success.

Any suggestions?
