IP address arrangement.

Dear Sir,

Usually one IP address corresponds to one host name. However, there are casese where a number of Ip addresses correspond to one host name. There are also cases where one IP address corresponds to a number of host names. Could anybody tell me what are the purposes of these two arrangements ?
