I work at a highschool as computer technician and I was recrimping a cat5e ethernet cable and noticed that it wasn’t wired according to the TIA/EIA 568 a or b wiring scheme. The scheme used at the school is orange, orange/white, green/white, blue/white, blue, green, brown, brown/white. I have notified the network administrator, but it doesn’t seem to matter since our IT dept. doesn’t do the cable runs/drops at the school. The electricians at our school do all the cabling, I would like to inform them, but I have a feeling a lot of people would look down at me and think less of me because I’m a young computer tech questioning the integrity of our network. However from the things I’ve read and have been taught from other respectable sysadmins is that mixing up the wiring scheme can cause cross talk and interference. This also causes a problem when we have outside people come in and install new equipment. My question is does it matter how its wired as long as it works? Would I be correct for questioning this?
