I was wondering if you could give your opinion on a specific situation that I am in. I work for a small city in Nebraska with a population of about 27,000. We have a small WAN, using single mode fiber provided “by contract” with the local cable t.v. company. When looking at the termination point of the fiber in 3 of our outbuildings I see six strands of fiber. In the Central Location I see 18 strands. Upon further testing, only 2 strands of fiber are available to two of the buildings, and the third building has only 1 strand of fiber available. The one strand of fiber makes it impossible to use our Nortel Gigabit Ethernet Card. In your opinion, would this be very scaleable? Also, would you say that this is a “State of the Art Network” It happens that the building with one strand of fiber is Public Works. There is going to be alot of data going across that link in the future because of a planned GIS implemention, Lotus Note Email rollout, and the sharing of many other resources. What do you thing? Are we getting the shaft?
I would appreciate any input you may have.
Thanks
Jeremy
