Issues loading anti-virus software

I have windows xp and I am having issues loading any type of anti-virus software. I first tried McAffee and it brings up the installation window but the interior of that window is blank. I then tried a cheaper wal-mart version by avanquest and it did the same thing, brings up the instaler window labled system suite 8 but with nothing on the interior as far as options for installation. I tried re-booting in safe mode with networking and still nothing. Could it be as simple as my disc drive or is it some sort of virus and if so any advice?
