Keyboard problem in Windows XP DOS mode

I’m trying to run QBASIC in a dos window on Windows XP Pro. I have a standard PS/2 Keyboard. When i’m editing a program and i press the arrow keys to navigate around the code i typed it treats it as if i was holding down the shift key and navigating, highlighting text as i go. How do i stop this? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
