LAB point to point serial connection

Hello All,
I am trying to connect my two Cisco 2600’s via a p2p serial connection for my home lab. From all my reading I see you would use a DTE/DCE cable? however, I have a WIC 1 DSU 56K card in each router. They cannot be connected via a serial cable (needs RJ45 port). I currently have a cross-over cable between them. They are still down/down.. with out a config they should be up/down right? Or can you not use these wic cards in a lab setting?
