My problem is as follow.
I am running a 2003 and 2000 server standard addition in a university Lab environment. I have three servers in three different server rooms each at the end of the day connecting to a backbone fibre optic switch that connects to main campus where the DHCP server is situated. I am registered on the network as our faculty?s personal internal domain, with active directory duplicating to all three-domain controllers; one server is set-up as a schema server with active directory.
I need fault tolerance when campus goes down or the switch connecting to the backbone, which ultimately connects my three connection points, goes down. By the way this is happening now at the moment. (It is like three separate towns sharing one active directory)
How do I configure DNS to resolve the users in Active Directory when logging on in their location (it seems I have trouble logging on as a user to active directory in a specific ?town? when the connection goes down at the backbone switch?
Is DHCP a factor if yes how can I overcome this problem for setting it up to operate independently from campus so it does not have IP conflicts?
So; at the end of the day I cannot log on as a user to the domain in Active Directory if the backbone is down and communication to the PDC is lost? (If the town is on its own). My workstations are Windows 2000 Pro and XP Pro.
