How to implement a functional shared work group for our LAN?
Problems:
1. Workgroup list won’t populate or is incomplete.
2. Says Network Resource is unavailable or cites permission problem.
3. Browse Master issues.
Attempted Fixes:
1. Tried to designate a Browse Master and disable reg entry on other systems.
2. Have experimented with using a lmhosts file.
Details:
1. Small business = don’t need Active Directory or even WINS server.
2. DNS is handled by ISP.
3. OS’s include, Wink2k, 2kServer, XP and 2003.
4. Can usually get to a network resource by typing in its location, ie \\mycomputer\.
Follow Up Questions:
1. Is there a way to concretely set a Browse Master and administer? (GUI, 3rd Party App)
2. Are there other viable alternatives to AD or WINS?
