The majority of our organization’s applications are currently written in Natural accessing ADABAS. We still have COBOL & ALC programs that access VSAM files as well. All systems are accessed through 3270 screens or through VB apps that scrape pre-existing 3270 screens. No direct database access from VB apps. We have begun a rewrite of all our internal transaction processing systems as well as a conversion to DB2. Some development has already been done using JAVA, but we lack significant expertise in house and are considering a change of direction.
My question is: What programming language(s) would be reasonable to use for rewriting these systems other than JAVA. We want to move away from 3270 and provide a GUI. We would also prefer a thin client. In house OO knowledge is limited. We’re looking for alternatives to consider. This is a high volume, back office type function.
