Laplink with nic cards

I have a desktop and a laptop with 2 compatible etherlink III network cards.
The desktop uses Win98 and the laptop uses WinMe.
When it comes to using Laplink Profesional and trying to connect the two computers together, I have no luck.
Could someone please help me out with setting up the configuration?
