Laptop screen way too dark

My monitor is so dark you would think it was off. if i hook up an external monitor it says “check connections” and then starts untill it gets to the xp logo screen then the monitor turns off. Is it the back light on the laptop plus a programing problem?
Its a presario r3000, pentium 4,512 mb ram,40 gb hd
