Laptop to home network

I just purchased a dell laptop for school use. I already have a desktop at home, which connects via a network cable to a wireless router, which is connected to a cable modem. The laptop connects to the internet fine through our router, but I can’t for the life of me set up file sharing from the desktop to the laptop. Both computers have file and printer sharing turned on, have the same workplace name, and each have a unique computer name. Neither comp shows up in each other’s “My Network Places”. Any suggestions?
