lightscribe dvd/cd burner

i just bought a hp pavilion mediacenter computer 2 months ago and i was wondering
is it normal that it would stop burning cd/dvd that short of time ? and how can you separite a software issue from hardware issue ?
and does runing a scan on the hardware riun the rest of your information on your computer??
i took my computer in for the dvd/cd not operating issue and that was what i was told??
it seems like a fish story to me ?/
i have windows vista operating system
